Susan Kelly vonMedicus

Susan's work is primarily hands-on art-making with a specialty in the Sacred Arts. Her research centers on development of contemporary applications for historic materials and includes subjects from earliest Coptic iconography, Celtic illumination, Byzantine iconography and modern art. Her study is how people from all periods of history and geography engage in the visual expression of their spiritual longings, questions and mysteries. Traditional natural materials and their applied use today interest Susan greatly; her practice includes egg tempera and gold leaf on supports such as sheepskin vellum and marble dust gessoed wood panels and lime plaster fresco buono, but you will find everything in her studio including oils, pastels, acrylic, epoxy and spray adhesives.

Susan is a studio art adjunct professor at Villanova University. She also teaches and coordinates for the Prosopon School of Iconology and she runs private art-making workshops. When not elbow-deep in paint or ink, Susan knits a lot. She keeps a garden, a coop of chickens, two dogs and a few hives of bees who make honey over a lavender field several hundred strong. Susan's work is exhibited internationally and is included in private and public collections. Notable among them the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, Monte Carlo, Monaco; Glencairn Museum, Bryn Athyn, PA; All Saints’ Church, Northampton England; The Hull Travelling Collection of the Prosopon School of Iconology and the Taoiseach of Ireland, Enda Kenny.
