John Brodeur

Gregorian Chant Instructor
John Brodeur

John Brodeur is a recent graduate from Franciscan University of Steubenville, OH where he studied Theology and Sacred Music with a concentration in voice. After graduating in 2012, John spent three more years at Franciscan as a full-time Residence Director studying Business Management before returning to his hometown of Westerly, RI in the summer of 2015.

John began working at Enders Island just a few months after his return to the area. John oversees the branding and marketing of Enders Island online: including website maintenance and development, social media engagement, and email communications. John frequently collaborates with the development office and reception staff as a technological aid and designer. He is excited to be part of the Enders Island staff and is particularly grateful for the opportunity to help Enders Island build a lively and robust online presence.  John Brodeur is also a lifelong cantor and church musician with many years' experience as a choir director in both forms of the Roman Rite. John has directed numerous choirs and presented on Gregorian Chant in several venues including the 8th Annual Colloquium of the Gregorian Institute of Canada in 2013. His article entitled "A Song for the Nations: The Davidic Covenant and the Music of the Temple" was published in the Winter 2012 volume of Sacred Music magazine.

Prior to his college years, John served as a choir member and section leader in a variety of choruses and as a long-time cantor at St. Pius X Church in Westerly, RI. He was a member of the RI All-State Chorus in 2007 and 2008. During his time at Franciscan University, John took direction of the newly formed Chapel Choir. In this capacity, he introduced the university campus to two Gregorian Mass settings, the singing of polyphony during Ordinary Form liturgies, and the use of sung Mass Propers in both English and Latin. In his Senior year, John was appointed the Student Head of Music Ministry and served as a key player in implementing the new translation of the Roman Missal. In addition to directing a contemporary music group during the primary Sunday liturgy, John frequently composed new music for his group and began an audit of the chapel's musical repertoire for approval by the local diocese. He also provided instruction to music leaders and their groups regarding the Church's musical heritage and the method of Gregorian Chant.

After graduation, John remained in Steubenville, OH where he continued to direct annual Good Friday services for the university and sang with several choirs - both sacred and secular. While living in Steuenville, John directed Sunday Vespers at the University and became director of the Schola Cantorum Sanctorum Angelorum, a men's schola which serves parishes from the surrounding dioceses.

In July 2015, John moved back to his hometown of Westerly, RI and soon after began working on Enders Island as a Social Media Manager, Web Designer, and Digital Marketing Assistant. Today, John serves as a professional cantor at Saint Mary Church in the Stonington Borough, a member of the Connecticut Ad Hoc Carolers, and a singer for the Ecclesia Consort of New England.
