Stained Glass Workshops
"For me a stained glass window is a transparent partition between my heart and the heart of the world." —Marc Chagall
Stained Glass allows for a freedom of vision and experience. Glass plays with light and space. It is transparent yet solid; an invisible shield of immense energy and force.
Mankind has always been fascinated by the light that is reflected through a stained glass window. They tell the faithful stories about Jesus Christ, the Apostles and the Saints. Traditionally, the glass artist follows a liturgical text or a biblical story, becoming a spiritual witness to Christ in his craft.
To begin, each piece of glass is carefully chosen, cut and then placed into a design that has been carefully mapped out. The drawing is then painted with a vitreous paint (finely ground glass, containing metallic oxide pigments) to shade and color the glass pieces. It is then fired in a kiln and soldered together.
On Enders Island, we continue the tradition of creating stained glass works of art in our annual week-long workshops.
