After an illustrious medical career, Dr. Thomas Enders purchased an uninhabited island from the Sisters of Charity and he and his wife, Alys VanGilder Enders, began to develop it as a private estate. Shortly before her death in 1954, Alys donated her homestead to the Catholic Society of St. Edmund because she wanted the beauty of her beloved island to be preserved.
Alys Enders’ magnificent bequest made possible what is now St. Edmund’s Retreat at Enders Island and its ministries of spiritual renewal, sacred arts and recovery from addiction.
Today, you can continue what Alys started and become a member of the Alys Enders Legacy Society by remembering St. Edmund’s Retreat in your will or estate plans, establishing a trust or charitable gift annuity or designating St. Edmund’s Retreat as the beneficiary of a life insurance or retirement plan.
Alys Enders Legacy Society members are invited annually to a special reception and have the satisfaction of knowing that their gift will transform lives and assure our mission of spiritual renewal and recovery continues well into the future.
