What is sacred painting?

Sacred painting is painting that is done to glorify God and be an act of worship. Sacred painting provides a window to heavenly realities, helping us to meditate upon the eternal and gaze on things unseen. This older way of making art is meant to glorify God and focus less on self-expression. The intent of painting in this way is meant to evoke feelings of reverence and beauty. In a world where originality is crowned the highest form of art: sacred art invites the viewer and artist to meditate on God’s word and appreciate what He has done for us in His plan of salvation. Materials, techniques, and mindset are all used in service to the word of God and reflect the beauty of His holiness, goodness, and mercy.

Why would someone want to take this class?

Sacred painting and old master techniques have been lost in today’s contemporary art world. By reviving and rediscovering these older methods of creating art, we as 21st century painters can carry on the tradition of the masters. If you would like to learn how to be a more skilled painter or more about the meaning of different religious paintings, this is a good beginning course. The painting methods are step-by-step and easy to remember, and can be used for personal projects in the future. It is a very rewarding and beautiful process, meant to achieve a high level of realism as a result.

What is the history of sacred painting?

Sacred painting has been a part of church tradition through the ages. Monks illuminated biblical texts with ground precious stones, inks, and gold leaf. Italian Renaissance masters painted with egg tempera on paneled large altarpieces. At the time of the Renaissance, Michelangelo painted a fresco on the Sistine Chapel ceiling in wet plaster. Jan van Eyck is the father of oil painting, and he revolutionized the technique of glazing. Artists following the Byzantine Icon tradition have a set imagery and technique for their works of art. Sacred painting has adopted many forms, utilized different materials, and shared different portions of scripture to share God with viewers. I hope that it excites you to actively participate in the tradition and beauty of sacred art.
