About

Taught by John Brodeur

A Chant Express workshop is specially designed for music professionals and recreational musicians who have previous singing experience. It can help deepen your understanding of Gregorian Chant, refine your musical technique, and equip you with the requisite knowledge and skills needed to implement the singing of chant repertoire in your parish or spiritual communities.

Throughout our time together on the beautiful grounds of Enders Island and in the resonant Chapel of Our Lady of the Assumption, participants are invited to experience a “oneness” of heart and voice through the study of Gregorian modes and neumes, chironomy, semiology, Latin diction and chant in the liturgy.

During this particular edition of the Chant Express, special emphasis is given to learning the Christmas chants of the Gregorian repertoire. We will also prepare some basic chants to help enhance the 9 am Mass each morning. Throughout the remainder of the day, we will take some time to sing the major hours of the Divine Office together. There will also be opportunities for individual participants to intone the chant, direct the chant, or accompany the chants.

Morning Mass and the Wednesday Vespers liturgy are open to the public.

Repertoire: During this special Christmas Edition, our aim is to provide training for parish musicians desiring to become more familiar with the both the popular proper chants. The workshop will equip musicians to effectively introduce portions of this repertoire into their year-end programming within a parish setting. We will spend the majority of our time together learning from the following repertoire:

Nativity of the Lord: Vigil Mass

  • Introit: Hodie scietis
  • Gradual: Hodie scietis
  • Alleluia: Crastina die
  • Offertory: Tollite portas
  • Communion: Revelabitur

Nativity of the Lord: Mass during the Night

  • Introit: Dominus dixit
  • Gradual: Tecum principium
  • Alleluia: Dominus dixit ad me
  • Offertory: Laetentur caeli
  • Communion: In splendoribus

Nativity of the Lord: Mass at Dawn

  • Introit: Lux Fulgebit
  • Gradual: Benedictus qui venit
  • Alleluia: Dominus regnavit, decorum
  • Offertory: Deus enim firmavit
  • Communion: Exsulta, filia Sion

Nativity of the Lord: Mass during the Day

  • Introit: Puer natus est nobis
  • Gradual: Viderunt omnes
  • Alleluia: Dies sanctificatus
  • Offertory: Tui sunt caeli
  • Communion: Viderunt omnes

Chant Hymns:

  • Adeste fideles
  • Alma Redemptoris Mater (simple tone)
  • Corde natus ex Parentis
  • Ecce nomen Domini
  • Hodie Christus natus est
  • Puer natus in Bethlehem
  • Resonet in laudibus
  • Salve Virgo singularis

Meals: The express workshop includes six meals: dinner on Monday; three meals on Tuesday and breakfast and lunch on Wednesday. Breakfasts include a hot, plated breakfast along with a continental array of breads, homemade jams, homemade granola, assorted cereal with milk, Greek and vanilla yogurts and seasonal fruit. Served lunches typically include a cup of home-made soup, an artisan half sandwich, and a seasonal side salad. Our formal, linen dinners start with a tossed salad, an all-american entree (chef's choice), and a paired dessert. Coffee, water, and tea are available at every meal and throughout the workshop.

Housing: Rooming options are subject to availability. We do our very best to ensure that all of our resident students room on Enders Island. In rare circumstances, it may be necessary for you to room off-island at a local hotel. In such cases, Enders Island will let you know well ahead of time, and we will provide transportation to and from your classes. Click here to view photos of our accommodations.
