Dr. Shawn and Dawn Kalis
St. Helen Parish in Dayton, OH
Shawn Kalis and Dawn Reynolds met in San Antonio, Texas as young Airmen while attending United States Air Force Russian language training in 1980. They fell in love, and were married in San Angelo, Texas on February 13, 1982. It was in the early 80s, while they were stationed together in northern Japan, that the seeds of a strong marriage, focused on Christ, were first planted. Taught and discipled by missionaries serving the Chapel and military community in Japan, Shawn and Dawn learned early in their marriage that Christ alone could make their life together healthy, fruitful, and happy. Throughout the years, and the many ups and downs, Shawn and Dawn never forgot those early lessons, and 36 years, eight children, and seven grandchildren later, they have a deeply committed, loving relationship that is still going strong. After completing her Air Force commitment in 1984, Dawn embarked upon a long and successful career as a professional wife, mother, homemaker, and homeschool teacher. She is still busy homeschooling their 12 year old son and staying active with her family, friends, and parish community. Shawn made the Air Force a 20 year career, eventually earning his Bachelor’s in Communications, a commission as an Air Force Officer, a Master’s degree in Middle East Studies and Hebrew, and a Doctorate in Humanities. Shawn and Dawn have lived half of their military lives overseas, and Shawn has traveled the world extensively, supporting the U.S. State Department and the not-for-profit Research Institute he presently serves as an Associate Director. Throughout their married lives, Shawn, Dawn, and their children grew in the Lord, and remained active members in their Churches, serving as teachers, Youth Directors, Young Adult Ministers, and mentors for married couples and families. They currently reside in Dayton, Ohio, and attend St. Helen Parish, where Dawn has served on the Education Committee and Shawn has served as a Eucharistic Minister, Parish Council member and President, Lector, and RCIA Catechist.
