About Enders Island
A scenic 11-acre island in Mystic, CT where men and women from all walks of life come to experience renewal, healing and inspiration.
What is Enders Island?
Enders Island is an 11-acre island off the coast of Mystic, Connecticut and the site of St. Edmund's Retreat, a 21st century Catholic Retreat Center independently owned and operated by a Board of Trustees since 2003. As a 501(c)3 religious nonprofit, Enders Island is dedicated to the work of spiritual care, recovery from addiction, and education in a variety of fine arts within the Christian tradition.
All Are Welcome
Guests are invited to take the journey across our single-lane causeway to visit the magnificent chapel of Our Lady of the Assumption, featuring dozens of unique works in Sacred Art—as well as the incorrupt arm of St. Edmund of Canterbury (1175–1240). Daily Mass takes place each and every day at 9 am and is live-streamed online each Sunday. During daylight hours, visitors are welcome to walk our grounds and experience the spectacularly preserved gardens of Alys Enders—the woman who first gifted this natural treasure to the Society of St. Edmund in 1954. A small gift shop with religious goods and home-made jellies is available in the foyer of St. Michael's Hall, and a public restroom is available in the chapel. Visitor parking is located immediately to the left of the causeway.

The grounds of Enders Island feature a small beachfront, breathtaking ocean views, a unique array of walking paths, a rose garden, an expansive lawn for outdoor activities, and (during the summer months) an impressive collection of over 200 dahlia breeds.
Complementing these natural amenities are a number of shrines, statues, and landmarks including a Marian grotto, the memorial garden of the Two Hearts, and an outdoor Seaside Chapel overlooking the eastern expanse of Fishers Island Sound.
We've reserved a place for you.
Scattered about the island are its various facilities, most notably the Enders House, an early 20th century arts and crafts style mansion which features a private Eucharistic chapel, an industrial kitchen, a variety of dining rooms, and a collection of 2nd and 3rd floor bedrooms available to overnight retreatants.
Other facilities include two outdoor gazebos, studio space in Angell Hall, a new state-of-the-art Conference Room in St. Michael's Hall (which also houses our dormitory-style bedrooms) and finally, a large meeting space for 12-step meetings in Father Joe's Place, located on the southwestern side of the island.
Three Areas of Ministry
The opportunities on Enders Island are varied and numerous. It is a community of gardeners, woodcarvers, bagpipers, iconographers, sacred artists, recovering addicts, cigar enthusiasts, and most importantly a community of Faith in Jesus Christ. Our unique tapestry of programmatic offerings is best expressed as three distinct, but inter-related areas of ministry:
Schedule an undirected private retreat that meets your individual needs or choose from a selection of programmed retreats with one of our beloved directors: days & evenings of recollection; weekend and week-long retreats for men, women, clergy, married couples and more—many with the opportunity for silence. Semi-annual bereavement programs are also available. Are you coordinating a retreat and interested in bringing your group? Don't wait! Contact us today to reserve your weekend.
Receive instruction in the fine arts from highly-skilled instructors sur-rounded by the inspiring natural beauty of Enders Island. Our spiritual approach provides opportunities for daily prayer, access to the sacraments and guided meditations. Choose from week-long, weekend or one-day workshops in Iconography, Manuscript Illumination, Calligraphy, Stained Glass, Mosaics, Oil Painting, Watercolors, Gregorian Chant & even Bagpiping. Instructors can accom-modate all levels of proficiency!
Discover the means of living a sober, balanced, joyful, peaceful life—free from the imprisonment of addiction by attending one of our weekly 12-step meetings in Fr. Joe's Place or one of our 6 annual weekend retreats designed for men and women in recovery. Weekly self-supported fellowships include AA, Al-Anon, ACOA, and SAA. We are also the site of a post-rehab Recovery Residence housing up to 12 college-aged men who form a community of mutual support and lasting recovery.
We can't wait to meet you.
