"Death of St. Joseph, after Francesco
Solimena, Meditation on Viaticum"
Oil on linen panel
24 X 20
NFS
Description:
Although the Council of Trent encouraged artists to focus on the canon of scripture as a source for sacred art, many of the traditions surrounding St. Joseph that originated in apocryphal writings continued to echo in Baroque paintings. An example of this is found
in the details of Solimena’s painting of St. Joseph, patron saint of a good death. The inclusion of the heavenly kingdom in the painting emphasizes Jesus’ Divine authority while placing one’s life on earth in the larger context of the eternal reality. Owed to "master
copy after Francesco Solimena."
